It is safe to say that 2019 was a hit and miss year for Bollywood in general. There were some record breakers as well as some that simply came and went so silently and made no noise at the box office. The year saw many different kinds of film and even though it wasn’t the best year for Bollywood, it certainly wasn’t the worst either. These are some of the movies that created a lot of buzz and at the same time celebrated cinema the way it should be celebrated. Here are some of the best Bollywood movies of 2019:

Gully Boy

This year can simply be called the year of ‘Gully Boy’ in Bollywood seeing the success of this Zoya Akhtar’s masterpiece. The film dropped in early 2019 and simply took the nation by storm. The actors gave skillful performances and the music rocked the charts for months. The fact that the film will be representing Bollywood in the next Academy Awards is enough proof that the film was simply one of the best to have come out of Bollywood in recent times.


Article 15

Ayushmann Khurrana is known to be a selector of great scripts and this film proves that too. Article 15 is a serious and thrilling drama film that tackles the heavy issue of caste discrimination and what it leads to. The film is at times hard to watch but will leave you with a lot to think about. It is easily one of the best films of the year and the performances and dialogues are good as well.


The Sky is Pink

When Priyanka Chopra made her way back to Bollywood after a year, it had to be with something that left a lasting impression on the audiences and critics alike. The sky is pink is a sensitive story about the struggle of one family with an ailing child. The film has many layers to it and most of all it celebrates love and hope between a family. Priyanka and Farhan had amazing chemistry and played their roles with an intensity that was needed from them.


Badla

Talking of silent and hidden gems of the year, this thriller film was simply a treat to watch. Tapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan can simply create magic together on screen and this film is the proof. Badla is a simple story of revenge and some masterful plotting. Most of the film takes place in a room with Amitabh Bachchan interrogating his client Tapsee Pannu and this just shows the excellence of the film as it doesn’t even need too many locations to set the plot. The film is performance driven and was easily one of the best in 2019.


URI: The surgical strike

If Akshay Kumar’s career has given any indication it is that patriotism sells and this film works it to its advantage as well. URI is based on true events and gets your adrenaline pumping with its action sequences. It may not be Vicky Kaushal’s career best performance but it is surely a great one and his physical training definitely pays off in the film. URI may not be the best film of the year but it is definitely one to remember and was quite entertaining as well.
